Data Science all-day workshop
Join us for an all-day workshop, where you'll learn to use the R coding language for data science applications. The workshop is sponsored by the Library, Social Data Collection and Analysis Services, and Montana INBRE. The schedule is below.
Introduction to R (9-10:50am)
This workshop will start with the building blocks of using RStudio to create and explore the data structures available in R. Then we'll learn some basic tools for inspecting, extracting, manipulating, summarizing, and visualizing data. We will also discuss accessing and using R packages, and how to use R's built-in help interface.
Data Visualization in R (11am-1pm)
The ability to create meaningful and attractive data visualizations is an essential skill of data-intensive research. This workshop will give you an overview of the grammar of graphics plotting concepts from the ggplot2 package. We will explore ggplot’s three plotting layers, data, aesthetics, and geometries, for many univariate and multivariate graphics. These concepts will be presented in an interactive format, integrating computational practice throughout the workshop.
Lunch (1-2pm)
Data Wrangling in R (2-3:50pm)
In this workshop, you will learn how to manipulate data in R using the dplyr and tidyr packages. Using dplyr, you will master the verbs of data manipulation to select, filter, mutate, arrange, and summarise your data, as well as, how to chain these operations together using the pipe operator. You will learn concepts of wide and long data formats, for which purposes each of these formats are useful, and how to reshape data frames from long to wide and back. These concepts will be presented in an interactive format, integrating computational practice throughout the workshop.
Coding with Generative AI (4-5pm)
In this workshop, we'll explore using Generative AI to write code and create method descriptions. We'll also discuss writing prompts and responsible use of Generative AI.
